The BLOOM (Bigelow Laboratory Orders Of Magnitude) program was begun by Bigelow researcher Maureen Keller and Trustee Emeritus James McLoughlin to provide students with real world ocean research experience. It offers involvement in on-going marine research to students with demonstrated aptitude in science. Activities include field sampling in a variety of marine environments, with subsequent data collection and analysis using state-of-the-art instrumentation. In addition, discussions are initiated on science and public policy, scientific ethics and career directions. Outcomes include understanding methods of investigation, broadening and strengthening the students' interest in science, and a forum for interaction among students and scientists.
