A Fresh
New Look is Coming
to this Webpage!
Soon you’ll
notice a fresh new look and book search capabilities. You'll be
able to search the book lists by title, author, topic, or suggested
reader age. The site will be divided into three portals: for children,
teens, and adults. There will be games, a monthly downloadable
computer desktop calendar, and links to our national partners.
Visitors will also be able to suggest a new COS nominee and submit
their comments or book review on-line. And, you’ll still
be able to find the websites of the month, science news—the
current event in science, and the COS program calendar. The site
will always be a work in progress, but I hope you find this latest
version user-friendly and a great resource.

Thermo Fisher Scientific
Funds National Expansion
Cornerstones of Science (COS) has received a major
donation of $300,000 from Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. in support
of the national expansion of its science literacy programs. COS
connects children, teens and adults to science andtechnology through
superb books, programs, and opportunities for citizen science.
It originates from Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, Maine.
“We are thrilled by the support of Thermo Fisher Scientific,”
exclaimed Jocelyn Hubbell, Executive Director of Cornerstones
of Science, “The donation will fund the addition of 20 libraries
to Cornerstones of Science over the next three years, bringing
the partnership to 25 libraries nationwide.”
The donation was granted through the Thermo Fisher Foundation
for Science, part of the company’s philanthropy in support
of science and science education. Thermo
Fisher Scientific is the world leader in serving science,
enabling customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer.
The company provides analyticalinstruments and services to customers
within pharmaceutical and biotech companies, hospitals and clinical
diagnostic labs, universities, research institutions and government
agencies, as well as environmental and industrial process control
settings. To learn more about Thermo Fisher Scientific and its
charitable organization, visit their website, www.thermofisher.com.
The national initiative began in 2006 with a pilot partnership
of five libraries from across the nation who share the COS vision
and serve as intellectual centers of their towns. COS partner
libraries add Cornerstones designated books to their collections,
offer science programs developed by COS, bring scientists and
science authors into their libraries for presentations, collaborate
to develop newprograms that can be used by all the libraries in
the partnership, and connect their patrons to the booklists and
science resources on the COS website. The expansion will focus
on adding libraries in Maine and New England. A COS National Partner
application may be requested from Jocelyn Hubbell at jhubbell@curtislibrary.com.
Application deadline has closed for 2007/08.
Cornerstones, though only seven years old this autumn, has attained
both programmatic success and national recognition, winning the
coveted Highsmith Library Innovation Award in 2006. The future,
through the generosity of Thermo Fisher Scientific, promises even
more innovation and collaboration.
