Cornerstones of Science is a national science literacy initiative
originating from Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, Maine. The
mission of Cornerstones of Science (COS) is to connect children
and adults to science and technology through superb books, programs,
and opportunities for community involvement in current scientific
issues.
COS has established a nationwide network of libraries that are
committed to replicating COS programming. The national partners
will be working as a team to produce and share program resources
during the next three years (January 2006 through December 2008).
Get Your Library Involved
After the initial three year partnership with the original COS National
libraries, additional libraires will be invited to join the initiative.
In the mean time, COS invites all libraries to link to the COS website
(for a listing of the COS designated books, the science websites
of the month, the monthly current event in science, and listings
of citizen science opportunities), request free spine labels for
the Cornerstones designated books in their collections, link to
our on-line book reviews, and participate in the Read, Write and
Win program. For more information call or e-mail Jocelyn Hubbell
at (207) 725-5242 ext.238 or jhubbell@curtislibrary.com.
As COS National evolves we will continue to focus on the expansion
of science literacy programs to interested libraries, increase partnership
with museums and science professionals, and make available a web-based
clearing house of science program templates.
