Book Review
The Moon, by Seymour Simon, is filled with gorgeous photographs
and easy to understand text about our Earth’s companion satellite.
The layout of the book makes me think of a visit to a science museum
or planetarium. On each page, large, clear photos are placed opposite
a white-on-black paragraph explaining a single topic: geography,
history, human exploration, and questions that still remain unanswered.
The section on the Moon’s age and origin includes the current
theory that it formed from material ejected from Earth when hit
by a large object very early in the history of the solar system.
My only complaint about the book is that it doesn’t include
the little extras that help you absorb what you’ve learned
and follow your curiosity further. It really would have been a much
better book if it had a glossary and sources for more information.
Probably best as a read-aloud book for young readers and elementary
age children, this is a tantalizing introduction to the moon.
I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
