It's Perfectly Normal: A Book About Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex, and Sexual Health
by Robie H. Harris

Book Review

The book I have chosen is It’s Perfectly Normal by Robie H. Harris. The illustrator is Michael Emberley. I think the author did a great job explaining about sex and puberty. This book is about going through puberty and learning more about it. It explains that getting your period and thinking about sex is just like the title of the book—perfectly normal.

There are parts of the book for boys and girls. The part for boys explains about getting wet dreams, erections and producing sperm. It also explains the parts of the penis and that if you are masturbating, there is nothing wrong with you. In the section for girls the book explains about getting your period and developing breasts. It explains that some girls develop before other girls and that nothing is wrong with you when you get your period. It tells you that getting hair under your arms and other places just means you are growing up. This book also talks about having sex and how you make children.

The author explained puberty very well and in a way that was not confusing. I think all kids should have access to this kind of information.

~ Leah McNally, Hawthorne School

Editor's Note: This book contains frank language and graphic illustrations which parents may want to review before reading with their child.
