Young Thomas Edison
by Michael Dooling

Review
In this case, you can tell a book by its cover. Dooling’s exquisite illustrations bring his tale of Thomas Edison’s formative years alive. This delightful story begins at Edison’s birthplace and leads the reader through his experiences at school, his first job, his first business at twelve years old, and his accomplishments as a young man. Dooling describes not only what Edison achieved but brings his character alive as well. Youngsters will relate to Edison’s inquisitiveness, his boundless energy, and his sometimes trouble-making, explosive experiments. It may inspire them to do a little inventing of their own and reflect on all that Edison developed that we take for granted today. Provided in the back of the book are illustrations and descriptions of many of Edison’s inventions, a selected bibliography, and suggested websites. Recommended for youth in grades 3-5.
