What Do You Do With a Tail Like This?
by Steve Jenkins & Robin Page

Book Review

What Do You Do With a Tail Like This? by Steve Jenkins and Robin Page was
chosen as one of the Caldecott Honor Books for 2004. I would like to nominate it as a Cornerstones book.

The colorful illustrations feel like they are popping out of the book. All the animals are made from handmade paper that has been torn, cut and pasted. Some of the animals look like the artist added string, fiber and fuzzy material. Yet the pictures look very realistic. The book shows a part of an animal’s body like an eye or an ear and then you have to guess what animal it is. When you turn the page, the book shows you the answers and tells you how the animal uses its tail, ear or eye. There is a section at the end of the book where there is more information on animals. It talks about how animals bathe themselves, how bats send out noises so they don’t run into things and other interesting facts.

I recommend this book for the great illustrations that teach you lots of things and make
reading like a game. Young children would like this book.
