Book Review

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edward J. Larson provides an overview of evolution theory by placing it within its cultural context. Weaving in the social and philosophical settings of the day, he traces the theory’s development and history from the early 1800’s and the foundation work of Georges Cuvier, to the notebooks of Charles Darwin, and contributions of scientists to present day. Wallace, Watson and Crick, and E.O. Wilson are spotlighted along with many great thinkers and scientists.

Larson’s literary style requires some concentration but will appeal to readers of history and the history of science. This is a timely book given current discussion about intelligent design, creationism, and the theory of evolution.
