| Cornerstones
of Science is a community project. You can get involved by:
Identifying candidate books
We need broad input for nominations – from parents, young
people, teachers, librarians, and scientists. We want to know your
own favorites, the books that stay in your mind, the books you reread
with pleasure and increasing insight, the books that you recommend
to others.
Validating science content and readability
We need your opinions on the accessibility of the scientific information
and the quality of the writing. Book

Spreading the word
Help us to get the word out about Cornerstones programs
by distributing program flyers and bookmarks.
For suggestions, to make nominations, or for more information about
reviewing books or volunteering please contact Jocelyn Hubbell,
(207) 725-5242 ext. 238.
Raising the funds
Initial funding for the project has come from private donations,
the Friends of the Library and a grant from the Maine Yankee Foundation.
These funds have gone directly into great new books for the children's
collection. In June, 2003 COS was awarded a Davis Family Foundation
grant in the amount of $15,000. This money will help to underwrite
the cost of additional book purchases, teacher trainings, public
programs, and book discussion groups.
As Cornerstones resources circulate in our local community, we
look forward to expanding our donor base and the opportunity for
grant support at the national level. Please consider making a donation
to the Cornerstones of Science fund. Your contribution will help
us to purchase books and media for children and adults, pay the
expenses of guest authors and scientists, help fund teacher trainings,
book discussion groups, and bring Cornerstones programs to local
schools.
