Fact Pack
Mission:
The Cornerstones of Science (COS) mission is to make science accessible to children and adults through the promotion of science literacy, readership, public programs and community involvement in current issues through use of the facilities of the Curtis Memorial Library, an intellectual center for Brunswick, Maine and the surrounding region.

COS Goals:
1. Identify superbly written, accurate, and stimulating science books and other media for children and adults.
2. Post reviews, comments and comparisons into the web-accessible catalog.
3. Construct an interactive COS website so that readers can add their own evaluations, suggest COS candidates, comment on Cornerstones programs, volunteer their services, and make donations.
4. Promote readership and utilization of COS resources and.
maintain their currency, availability and quality.
5 . Organize guest lecture series and community programs that further the goals of Cornerstones of Science.
6 . Provide training opportunities in science subjects for primary and secondary school teachers.
7 . Engage libraries and communities throughout Maine and beyond in a national Cornerstones of Science program.

The Beginnings:
The Cornerstones of Science was the brainchild of Lee Grodzins, Professor of Physics Emeritus, MIT, energetic library supporter, and part-time resident of Brunswick, Maine. His vision and energy was contagious as he and Steve Podgajny, Director of the Curtis Memorial Library, met in the autumn of 1999. Soon afterward, Lee contributed funding toward the project and Steve and Lee established a working group of library staff and community volunteers. This group identified the original Cornerstones books, initiated the reviews, established the web site and newsletter, and planned the Cornerstones opening event.

The Future:
The Curtis Memorial Library has established a strong foundation from which to develop the next phase of the Cornerstones of Science (COS). We have planned aggressive growth over the next three years with stabilization in the 2005-06 fiscal year. Objectives for each of the three years are listed below. // Go to page 2
